Livin' High and Takin' it Easy

DBR Grill, located in between the old Dumaluan Beach Resort and the newer, posher Dumaluan Beach Resort, is the place to go to for good cheap food when in Dumaluan Beach. It is also the place to buy other things you need at a cheap price – like bottled water, medicine, and other beach supplies.

There was also a little booth next to this little sari-sari store where you could book island hopping tours at a cheap price (P2,500 for a day trip to Balicasag and Virgin Islands, dolphin watching early in the morning included).

We had a lunch buffet at our own expense at Bohol Beach Club, decided to forego the dinner included in our Rainy Day Package for the next day, and headed to DBR Grill for cheap food.

Freshly-showered and still with wet hair, the entire family took some time looking around the place while waiting for dinner time.

Dumaluan Beach Resort sits right next to Bohol Beach Club but its a totally different environment. A security guard vigilantly guards the border between the two resorts and only resort guests are allowed to hang out by the BBC beachfront. On the other hand, Dumaluan Beach is a public beach and thus, there always seems to have like hundreds of people swimming and picnicking on the other side in contrast to the long stretch of near-empty beach in front of Bohol Beach Club.

DBR Grill is a collection of bamboo and nipa huts and tents with plastic tables and chairs set out underneath.

You go to this little hut to pick your choice of food among a collection of fresh fish, hotdogs, fish balls among others and place your orders.

You may choose from the chalk board menu and these are what are available.

The lady jots down your orders and totals it. After paying for your orders, the lady gives you a number on a piece of bamboo and you may go and pick the table you want.

Be warned that since they do not pre-cook orders, it might take you as long as an hour or more to get served. Be prepared to entertain yourself in whatever manner (like playing with the dogs that are out and about) while you wait.

There is also a little store that sells trinkets, accessories and other souvenirs.

Come night fall, the tables are lit with votive candles and native lamps hanging from the ceiling of the huts and the tents.

I always, always take photos of lamps because they, like boats, are one of my fixations.

We ordered this fish they called Katambac and had them cook it into sinigang. We paid a total of P410 for the following:

1 Katambac – P200
2 BBQ – P50
2 Rice – P30
2 Calamansi Juice – P80
1 Mango fruit – 50

Fresh fish is always delicious and the sinigang was good. I have had better barbecues in other places and the calamansi juice was the purest calamansi juice one could ever have.

A blind man came around and entertained us with a song to the accompaniment of his guitar, joined in by two young children every now and then. This little entertainment goes around from table to table singing English songs, Tagalog songs as well as songs in the local dialect. If anything, it was Lia who was the most entertained and we gave the man a twenty peso bill for his little enterprise.

Over-all, food was not that bad and we came home with stomachs full and our pockets still relatively heavy.
