One of the oldest inn and restaurants in El Nido, The Alternative Inn on Sirena St. has also always been one of my favorite hangouts in town. The place is very quiet and cozy. The place has also undergone changes every now and then, like our favorite reading area is gone and there isn’t an internet shop here anymore, but it is still the same place with the hanging balcony, right over the beach, and during December, right over the waves! (I used to blog from The Alternative back in 2005 when I still used the Friendster blog and internet rates in town were P120/hr via satellite. This year, I went there every time I needed to be alone with my thoughts or be on Skype with my Travel Factor friends).
I was there during the months of July to September, during off-peak, and this is their off-peak rates:
On the ground floor, upon entrance, the restaurant’s restroom is on the left, on the right is the stairs going up the restaurant, the restaurant’s kitchen in the middle, and the rooms are behind the kitchen as well as on the left. Since it was also off-peak, establishments generally use this season to do improvements and maintenance. The place looks drab here in my photos BUT I stumbled on a recent blog and the place looks brand-spanking new! They must have repainted and done repairs last September. Check out the photos HERE. The Alternative is almost right on the beach, that during the months of November and December, the waves are almost on the stairs and lapping at the building’s foundations. On the ground floor, there is an open space (terrace) right outside the rooms, that I find to be quiet and quite relaxing.
Beachfront, good for 2pax, ground floor, private bathroom, Php1,200/night:
By the street, Standard, good for 2 pax, private bathroom, ground floor, Php700:
Beachfront family room, good for 4 pax, with a private balcony, private bathroom, ground floor, Php1,500/night:
Standard room, with shared bathroom, good for 2 pax, street-side, second floor, off the side of the restaurant, Php500/night:
Though I seldom eat here, from reviews, the food is good! Their specialty is healthy foods so expect unique items on the menu. (like star anise tea!)
The breakfast/coffee/tea table:
And everyone’s favorite place to hang out at, reservations are sometimes necessary, and nicknamed, The Nest:
It was mid-afternoon when I dropped by so the “nests” were empty, but when the sun is no longer too hot, the staff brings out the pillows, making the nests ultra-cozy. They also bring the pillows in when it rains.
When rooms are booked with breakfast included, this is the menu:

The Alternative is my favorite place for an afternoon pinacolada.
I’ve always liked this place because it is spacious and offers other things to do, they used to have a mini-library and we’d spend hours here just reading during the rainy season. They also have an organ, and games, like sungka. They also have free wi-fi.
