Catch Dulaang UP’s # R < / 3 J, a multimedial hallucination on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. # R < / 3 J retells the story of the star-crossed lovers transforming Verona into a concrete jungle at the heart of Metro Manila – teeming with corruption, revolt, advertisements, sex, social media and condominium units. This theatrical project seeks to dramatize, through a pastiche of movement, music, intertext, video and design, the postmodern tragedy of our generation.
What price do we pay.. when everything is for sale?
What happens to a society that is overrun by greed and materialism? By shifting moral values and by acquisitive desires?
Collection, the much-awaited new work from acclaimed playwright Floy Quintos is a dark comedy that paints a disturbing picture of society obsessed with conspicuous consumption, surface glamour, and the endless, unsatisfying pursuit of the Next Big Thing. Collection closes Dulaang UP‘s 37th Season.
In this artistic vision of a materialist hell, a fictional government agency, the National Commission on the Disposal of Philippine Patrimony, has sanctioned the sale of historical and national treasures like the Banaue Rice Terraces, the Chocolate Hills and the Malolos Constitution. The proceeds go to a national lottery designed to alleviate poverty through dole outs.
Every February, we all look forward to the biggest musical event happening at the Sunken Garden of the University of the Philippines Diliman – the UP Fair. More than just a musical event, there are food booths and little stores selling all kinds of interesting stuff and offering services like henna tattoos, palm reading, and the likes. There are also fair rides like the ferris wheel and the octopus, among others (but of course I have to say ferris wheel because it is absolutely my favorite ride of all time), and all kinds of booths offering freebies, from condoms to photos, depending on participating sponsors. You get my drift. In effect, we can say that aside from the Lantern Parade, with the corresponding Oblation Run, and our graduations with the sunflowers, it IS the biggest event of the campus every year. One whole week of all these things! How much fun can it get?!
I can say much about the UP Fair, but I will reserve that for the next week when I might be blogging about every single night I am there, or maybe just one or two, depending on my very hectic schedule. Let me say this for sure though, UP Fair 2013, we are so ready for you! Are you ready for us though?
Here are the most updated schedule, line-up, and other relevant information regarding the UP Fair 2013.
Do come back here for updates in the coming days.
One important thing is: the ticket prices are now standardized, as opposed to previous years when ticket prices varied depending on the host organization or the line-up, but this year, every night, the ticket price is Php100. Such an awesome deal that “affordable” could not possibly be more than an understatement.
So, UP Fair 2013, we are really so ready for you! And we know that you never disappoint.

Dulaang UP’s second offering on its 37th Season, The Seagull/Ang Tagak, is a compelling discourse about art, life, and love presented through intricate characters and situations in what is widely considered to be master dramatist Anton Chekhov’s greatest work. In the middle of these romantic and artistic conflicts are more elaborately developed characters, a staple of Chekhov’s works. This comedy in four acts effectively discusses themes in art and life that remain relevant in this day and age.
The Seagull/Ang Tagak is directed by the venerable Tony Mabesa. The production stars theater veterans Ana Abad Santos, Frances Makil-Ignacio, Ces Quesada, Leo Rialp, Menggie Cobarrubias, Jeremy Domingo, Alfonso Deza, Stella Cañete Balucas and promising actors Carlo Tarobal, Zafrullah Masahud, Nadine Samonte, and Karen Gaerlan.
It was staged both in English (translation by Tom Stoppard) and Filipino (translated by Rolando Tinio). The production is on its last run this week.
Here are some production photos from the Filipino version October 3rd. (The entire set is HERE.)

I’m feeling all bummed out, fatigued and not really in the best of moods right now. Two days I have been going through Facebook liking things I see and wanting to share them but I was just really, let’s say, poofed, for the lack of more original terms.
But I see this trailer of Dulaang U.P.’s upcoming play – The Seagull/Ang Tagak by Anton Chekhov and it’s enough to make me jump up in my seat.
I am an absolute Chekhov fan.
Before I was this and that, and this and that, I was a Biology major undergraduate. Dexter Santos, also then still an undergraduate, was supposed to give a directing workshop to the members and applicants of UP Repertory Company one Saturday morning. He and I waited at the venue for two hours for the supposed participants. None came. So we decided to just head over to the Tanghalang Hermogenes Ylagan (THY) at the Faculty Center of UP Diliman where Three Sisters was on.
It had Frances Makil-Ignacio, Miren Alvarez, Chol del Corro, Tommy Abuel, Paolo Fabregas, Fonz Deza, Camilla Kim, Edna Mae Landicho and also one of my favorite professors Amiel Leonardia, acting in an adaptation directed by no less than Anton Juan, in the intimate setting of the THY in a cruciform configuration.
There is not a lot of plays that move me. Sometimes I would get moved by just how fantastic the visuals are, or the light design, or the music, or the movement, but that play, had none of the flamboyance and was very raw yet very subdued. I was moved to tears.
I can still remember every bit of it. Astounding, considering how good my Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind skills have become after much practice.
And when I became a Theater major graduate student, the more I fell in love with Chekhov. So much so that my mentor would tend to remember me every time a Chekhov play is on in the metro.
And there you go, a Chekhov play. Please Sir Tony, make it good, make it good…
A seagull is shot and everything unravels.

This is a series:
I woke up at nine in the morning and thus arrived thirty minutes late for David Henry Hwang‘s talk and playwrights’ forum at the Carlos P. Romulo Hall in U.P.’s CAL Building.
I was there to document so the first thing I did was take photos. I know Mr. Hwang was talking about how to write a play when I got there but I could not listen to the full details while I was trying to be as un-intrusive as possible with my documentation.
The hall was packed with students as well as faculty members.
