Everyday is Mother’s Day As Long as…

MOMents By May 11, 2014 Tags: , , , , , , No Comments

So today is Mother’s Day and as in the past 5 years, I didn’t feel or do anything special. I remember last year’s Mother’s Day was extremely difficult. I was alone in my family’s condo in Taguig and afterwards I was walking around the mall in tears. I went to a waxing salon and they thought my tears were all because of the wax. I had to assure the lady that it wasn’t.

I sent Mother’s Day greetings to all my surrogate mothers, the “mothers” I have known, the “mothers” I still have, and the women in my life that were the closest to the mother I could ever have. I have never been very close to my own mother but she passed away in 2011 and the fact that I had no real mother to speak of, to celebrate Mother’s Day for, caused me a lot of pain.

And also because nobody celebrates Mother’s Day for me. Until Lia is old enough to know it, nobody will do special things for me on Mother’s Day.

But really, Mother’s Day is not only one day a year. Or twice a year depending on your nationality and where you are currently living (like my niece in Sydney).

Last year, I was feeling absolutely horrible, sad, lonely, and basically all those depressing adjectives, because not only was Mother’s Day passing by with nary a trace, the reason I can be and am called “Mother” was absent.

This year’s Mother’s Day is better simply because my daughter is with me. We don’t have to do anything special. I don’t have to receive anything. Every single day that I spend with Lia is Mother’s Day.

Everyday is Mother’s Day as long as I have her with me and that’s all that matters.

Summer and Angku Through the Years

I was in Manila last week for my friend’s wedding. She and I have been friends since university and have been through all kinds of stuff! Like really, all kinds! 😛

This was taken at my bridal shower in 2006.

And she was the on-the-day coordinator for my wedding.

I move around a lot so we don’t get to see each other much. We make it a point to see each other when we can – in the few times I am in Manila each year.

This was taken outside of 70’s Bistro in Quezon City in 2012. This was the night she told me she was getting married.

Throwback: Make-up by E.J. Litiatco

I first met E.J. Litiatco in 2006. We did the trial make-up at her salon in Visayas Avenue.

We had the pre-nup shoot after in the U.P. Diliman campus.

E.J. did the make-up for my wedding in 2006. (And a number of my friends for their own weddings thereafter.)

Today is my parents’ 37th wedding anniversary. My mom is perpetually, notoriously late at everything. I always heard her tell people “I am on my way” when in fact she was just on the way to the bathroom to take a bath, and it takes her an hour to get dressed too. My dad says in all their years together, my mom was only early twice: on their wedding day …and to heaven.

My dad has some sense of humor. We miss you Ma. Wherever you are now, there is no more pain… We love you.

Your Sunsets and Mine

Old Writings By November 11, 2010 Tags: , , , , , No Comments

I always forego writing anything, for lack of time. I am so busy. I am exhausted most of the time. I am always running after time and I barely have a moment to catch my breath. Today, I will take a moment – just once in the freneticity of my days, to write down, after six months, pieces of my thoughts.

Two days ago, I came up the overpass to cross to where my village is, and looked up to see a glorious sunset. Much like my sunsets of old, my sunsets in El Nido – though less spectacular, glorious nonetheless. It was not as red, nor as pink, nor as deeply hued. I could not see the purples, violets, or fuchsias. It was a patch of colors in a sea of galvanized iron sheets.

Friends at Sarah and Raffy’s Wedding

Last Saturday was a hectic day for me. I was up late doing last minute preparations for the bazaar that day and was up early to go to Rockwell Tent to set up. The Global Pinoy Bazaar started at 10am and we were there as early as 7:30am to do the set-up. Then it was also my turn to man the booth until 3pm.

Sarah’s wedding was scheduled at 4pm and there was no way I was going to make it to the church with my schedule. I was actually home taking a nap at 4pm. We made it to the reception though and it was just us oldies (yes, I like to call me and my friends oldies, at least when it comes to U.P. Rep, since we hang out a lot with the younger ones).

Here are a few pictures of us at our little photo shoot at the Wack-wack Country Club lobby.
